Fitzgerald Marine Reserve was first developed as a spa and weekend "getaway" for San Francisco's elite. This kept the area in a natural state--important since the reserve is a delicate coastal area. At low tide, there are many tidal pools and reefs to explore. The cooler months are a bonanza for birders, as the rich waters in the cove attract a number of migratory species either "passing through" or staying for the Winter months. Here you'll find Scoters, Cormorants. Pelicans, Gulls, Guillemots, and Mergansers, as well as some resident Sparrows, Finches, and Phoebes.
